The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is ushering a new model to obtain a Kentucky driver's license, permit or ID card.  Circuit Court Clerks have traditionally issued and renewed these credentials in addition to handling their circuit court duties.  Per KRS 186.490, no later than June 30, 2022, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will be assuming all licensing responsibilities from each of the 120 Circuit Court Clerks.

The new model we are introducing is a regional model rather than a county-by-county model.  All Kentuckians will visit Driver Licensing Regional Offices to apply for or to renew a driver's license, permit or Id card.  The Kentucky State Police will continue to conduct driver testing both in written and driver road test formats.  This will start November 29, 2021.
